Here are some of the highlights and recaps from spring training game on March 6th.
Tampa Bay Rays 5, Philadelphia Phillies 4
The Rays pulled off a dramatic comeback against the Phillies, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to secure a 5-4 victory. Prospect Brock Jones was the star, hitting home runs in his first two at-bats of the spring. His second homer, a two-run shot off former Rays reliever Joel Kuhnel, tied the game at 4. Second baseman Curtis Mead had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 and raising his spring average to .778. For the Phillies, Nick Castellanos and Max Kepler hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Aaron Nola was impressive, striking out six over three scoreless innings.
Washington Nationals 12, St. Louis Cardinals 1
The Nationals dominated the Cardinals with a 12-1 win. Catcher Keibert Ruiz led the offense with two home runs, while Nasim Nunez contributed three of Washington’s 13 hits. Right-hander Michael Soroka was effective on the mound, striking out six over four innings. The Cardinals managed only five singles, with Willson Contreras collecting two hits.
Toronto Blue Jays 7, Boston Red Sox 4
The Blue Jays’ offense was in full swing against the Red Sox, leading to a 7-4 victory. Shortstop Bo Bichette was a standout performer, going 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot and scoring in the first inning after a single and a double by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The Jays also got back-to-back home runs from Eric Clement and Dylan Schneider in the second inning. Reliever Andrew Bash secured the save by striking out the side in the ninth inning.
Minnesota Twins 8, New York Yankees 4
The Twins capitalized on a rough outing by Yankees ace Gerrit Cole to win 8-4. Outfielder Matt Wallner hit a three-run homer in the second inning, capping a five-run frame. Brooks Lee added a solo shot in the third off Cole, who was charged with six runs in 2 2/3 innings. For the Yankees, Mike Ford and Mickey Gasper homered off relievers to narrow the gap, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
San Francisco Giants 7, Chicago White Sox 3
The Giants showcased both power and pitching in their 7-3 win over the White Sox. Ace Justin Verlander struck out four over four innings, allowing one run on four hits. Third baseman Matt Chapman provided the offensive fireworks with two solo home runs. Jung Hoo Lee also contributed a two-run homer, and Mike Yastrzemski added a two-run shot in the … .For the White Sox, Adam Hackenberg hit a two-run homer in the … , but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.
Texas Rangers 8, San Diego Padres 2
The Rangers’ offense was firing on all cylinders in their 8-2 victory over the Padres. Marcus Semien and Cameron Cau … each homered, with Cauley’s two-run blast doubling the Rangers’ lead in the seventh. Starting pitcher Cory Bradford tossed four innings, giving up two home runs but striking out two. Jack Leiter provided solid relief, throwing three innings with three strikeouts. For the Padres, Eguy Rosario and Jackson Merrill each hit solo home runs off Bradford.
Los Angeles Dodgers 8, Texas Rangers 4
The Dodgers’ bats came alive in their 8-4 win over the Rangers. Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Tommy Edman each homered, contributing to a 4-0 lead. Pitcher Dustin May was sharp, striking out three over three scoreless innings. The Rangers attempted a comeback, with Nick Ahmed hitting a two-run homer to cut the lead in half, but Edman’s two-run shot in the sixth sealed the victory for Los Angeles.
Detroit Tigers 17, Philadelphia Phillies 7
The Tigers’ offense exploded in a 17-7 rout of the Phillies. Jahmai Jones, Andy Ibanez, and Gleyber Torres hit consecutive home runs, highlighting a six-run second inning. Detroit added another six runs in the third, totaling 17 hits in the game. Starter Reese Olson was effective, allowing only one hit over three innings. The Phillies’ starter, Jesus Luzardo, struggled, giving up six runs in just two innings.
Baltimore Orioles 5, Minnesota Twins 2
The Orioles secured a 5-2 victory over the Twins, with Livan Soto leading the charge by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and a stolen base. Adley Rutschman and Heston Kjerstad each added two hits and an RBI. Starter Grayson Rodriguez had a brief outing, allowing three hits and one run over 1 1/3 innings. For the Twins, Royce Lewis and Ty France each recorded two hits and an RBI.
Houston Astros 6, St. Louis Cardinals 5
The Astros rallied late to edge the Cardinals 6-5, with Collin Price delivering a walk-off single in the ninth inning. Houston’s offense was powered by home runs from Jeremy Pena, Jose Altuve, Jake Meyers, and Luis Castro.
